After archeologists exhume skeletal remains of an uncategorized species, a biological expedition is launched into the Amazon in an attempt to uncover more of the mystery. While anchored in the titular lagoon, they begin their research only to find themselves in over their heads, and at the mercy of unmitigated evolution.

As a movie buff that adores both monster movies and classic film, this one is real high up there on my favorites list. It grabs me both as a biology nerd, and a dude that really appreciates some really good costume and visual effects direction. It was my first toe in the 'can classics hold up in hi-def' pond, and I am pleased to say yes.

Yes they can.

While there are a few classic titles in my blu ray collection that don't hold up in HD, this one really shines. The contrast in the highs and lows are crisp and make for some great cinematography for a film made in 1954. Sure, there are the inevitable corny tropes of monster movies, ie the 'clutching the shore' shots are comically goofball as hell, but try to remember- this movie is more than sixty years old.

And it's still worth checking out.
