Dark Matter is a thrilling and suspenseful character-driven mystery built upon a traditional sci-fi foundation of space travel and future-tech, and is based on the Dark Horse comic series of the same name. It centers on a spacecraft called the Raza and its motley crew of six, that wake from hyper-sleep to discover that none of them have any memory of who they are, or how they even got on the ship. They procedurally name one another in the order they woke, from One to Six. In the immediate struggle to understand the situation at hand, they find themselves unwillingly forced onto a nearby planet, helping a mining colony defend itself from Corporate overthrow and attempted genocide. The events following the conflict shed a grim light upon the crew of the Raza, and their origins, and ultimately- their role in a much, much bigger picture.
Without saying too much, because this story is jam-packed with all sorts of spoilery material, this is why I loved Dark Matter and why you should be watching it on Netflix...
The cast is all aces here; from One to Six, and even the Android, this series is one of my new favorites. Two and Five, in particular, personal favorites of mine for many reasons you'll have to tune in to sympathize with. The tension between the characters as they form bonds with one another while ultimately seeking to understand themselves is taught, and inevitably rewarding. On the other side of that coin, the atmosphere is soaked with paranoia and an absence of trust in many cases, and relationships between the crew dissolve almost as they quickly as they are forged, creating a manic, and extremely enjoyable story that I enjoyed a lot. It kept me guessing right down to the last few seconds, and wasn't in anyway what I would call predictable.
Love this series, hope it continues to be as great as the initial season was. It has all the great elements of space traveling misfits sci-fi and if you love stuff like Guardians of the Galaxy and Firefly, you should most certainly give this a chance.
