When a dimensional rifts opens deep within a trench in the Pacific Ocean and begins producing massive creatures called Kaiju, the governments of the world band together to try and stop the invasion. With their militaries all but depleted, they turn to a revolutionary technology in a bold attempt to level the playing field. That technology, is the Jaeger Program; combining the minds of two pilots inside gaint machines called Jaegers, mankind appears to have found it's last hope in a seemingly hopeless war.
Pacific Rim is amazing, albeit a slightly niche action flick. Directed by Guillermo del Toro, it will appeal to anyone into anime for obvious reasons, but it may not be for every action movie fan out there. It is, however, one hundred percent everything it needs to be, and what that is, is absolutely glorious. I haven't seen a movie like this since Robot Jox, and as a fan of anime, it didn't take much to sell me on this one.
It has characterization familiar with a lot of anime; the cocky, soul-searching pilot that is struggling to overcome some rough shit, the cute girl that also happens to be a badass, and the rough around the edges 'guy in charge' with a perpetual frown that actually turns out to be a saint with something to lose. There's also a great pair of well-juxtaposed mad scientist types, and a shady cyclops with some real fancy shoes, but the real draw here is the action.
The Jaeger v Kaiju scenes are the kind of guilty pleasure film making I'm quite fond of. I love monster movies, and that most certainly includes classic Godzilla films. That combined with live-action Mecha and you've got a winning formula for great entertainment as far as this guy is concerned. Watching an enormous monster shove a Mech through a skyscraper like it was made of toothpicks is like watching two gods throw down, and it is very cool looking.
I really love this movie. It's unique for live-action, and o cool looking, and if you are a hardcore action movie junkie, this is an absolute must-own that shines on Blu Ray. I saw this in the theater in 3D, which was amazing, but it is a sight to behold on Blu Ray and in my opinion better than on the big screen. If you haven't seen this, get your hands on a copy and enjoy. You won't regret it.
