The Accountant is a riveting dramatic thriller starring Ben Affleck in what may possibly be considered one of his best roles over the following years, accountant Christian Wolff, and is punctuated by a great supporting cast consisting of Anna Kendrick, Jon Bernthal, JK Simmons and John Lithgow.
Affleck is absolutely brilliant as Wolff; a very flawed man that has been raised through unconventional means to be able to survive and use his imperfections to his benefit, that is...not exactly what he appears to be on the surface. There's some really great left-field laughs that are born of his social awkwardness, in a square peg/round hole fashion, that I loved about the writing. And there's just enough a glimmer of emotion and attraction between he and Kendrick’s character to provide an otherwise withdrawn and socially disjointed Wolff some room to grow through the narrative which plucked at my heartstrings juuust enough to not feel tonally out of place. Bernthal’s character was a refreshingly near-polar opposite-yet-similar build, and as always I enjoyed his screen presence. The action amidst the tense dramatic thrill ride was BADASS. Affleck continues to sell himself as an actor with great range, including being able to pull off some really sick action scenes. Overall, I just really loved this flick. I waited months for this to come out and man was it worth it. However, while not a detriment, there is one twist that I saw coming miles away. You don't study storytelling your whole life without being able to identify narrative red flags with little scrutiny. That being said- it did not in any means dampen the impact. It was actually one of my favorite parts of a very good story. Anyhow folks, that's all I care to say about this movie without revealing too much else. I loved it. Easily in the best of 2016 list. Watch it.
