If you're a fan of comic flicks and have not yet seen or at least heard of this movie, all I can say is that I hope the rock you live under isn't too rough on the rent. Long story short- Wade Wilson is a badass mercenary with a heart of gold that finds out he has cancer and only months to live then undergoes a crazy insane experimental procedure and that is where this story really begins. Sure, if you wanted to generalize; it's a revenge/superhero action/comedy/love story. And it's aces in every pursuit.
Deadpool is a would-be Sisyphean work of comic-to-screen art. If you don't know the story of how this movie got made, let me direct you to a magical land called 'the internet'. It's pretty cool. Lots of porn. But I digress... It went from 'on the verge of never happening and on a shelf' to being 'one of the highest grossing comic book movies of all time'. It was worth the wait, as a fan I will say that with a toothy grin.
My first Deadpool exposure was the Joe Madureira penciled four part mini-series the Circle Chase. I was a huge fan of Joe's work, and as a Spidey fan my first thought was 'assassin Spidey?!?' and as it happens, I wasn't too far off the mark. I've always wanted to see this character done accurately on screen and had been hold on to hope for a while before it was ever released. I caught wind of the Wernick & Reece script in 2010 when Robert Rodriguez was being vetted as a possible director, and continued to keep up on it leading up to the infamous test footage leak.
By that point, the money was in the bank for Deadpool. The studio heads ate their feet for dinner and green lit of one the best superhero movies ever made that proved that giving the fans what they want as opposed to studio meddling with what isn't broke and doesn't need fixing can make money.
A LOT of money.
It's so great on many levels; the humor is a relentless rib shot after rib shot of laughter [who does masturbation jokes better than Deadpool?], and the action and choreography was Deadpool realized with an almost scary brilliance, and it was awesome. The love story element was real and not remotely polished in any way, and you actually wanted to see them together at the end. One thing I loved about this film that I will gladly elaborate on- my dislike for pop-soundtracks, and preference for a composed score. It's understandably a tone/usage issue, but not unlike Guardians of the Galaxy used its soundtrack as a character and plot element, Deadpool uses its soundtrack as meta-humor weaved into the moment at hand and it's absolutely wonderful. The 'where's Francis?' montage is easily one of my favorite scenes in a comic book movie, period.
It should also be noted that the opening credits are quite arguably the best opening credits, of all time, ever.
If you haven't already seen this, you most certainly should watch it. I love the holy enchiladas out of this movie, almost as much as I love burritos. And THAT is saying a LOT.
