The Losers is an action/crime/ensemble film based on the DC Vertigo comic of the same name, and begins with our titular group of US black ops, led by Clay, on a search and destroy mission in Bolivia. When they locate their target, a compound operated by a notorious drug lord, they paint it up for demolition as they stumble unto an unfortunate truth when they see children in the area about to be demolished. The group tries desperately to call off the strike, but their superior, Max, ignores them. Clay and the group decide to intervene, and rush into save the children in the village. When they get the children loaded into a helicopter and on their way to safety, the group is double-crossed by Max, and they narrowly escape their deaths. Presumed dead, they plot to avenge themselves their former employer.
Several months later, when an attractive young female named Aisha introduces herself to Clay, she tells him that she has the perfect means of which to exact his revenge, as well as her own, and that they should work together to bring Max down. The following events I'll do the favor of divulging, as this flick is slightly peppered with a few twists that I can't poke around.
This was my first exposure to Jeffrey Dean Morgan's work, and I have been a big fan since. Chris Evans was great as the pretty-boy/nerd comic relief character, Jensen, and was a lot of fun in every scene he's in. Zoe Saldana as Aisha was badass, and as per usual she's just awesome. Patric's Max was also good for some dark comedy, but not at all over the top; he keeps it cool when he's being a cold, ruthless bastard. Elba as Roque was great, but he's always aces when he's on screen so there's not much more I can say on his behalf. I very much enjoy this flick, and I feel it's better than most of DC's superhero films. While I am a fan of Andy Diggle's writing, and the artwork of Jock, I had no previous exposure to the source material, so I can't really base comparisons.
The blend of colorful, interesting characters paired with the intriguing revenge-story plot, and some really cool, and very fun 'old school shoot-out movie' action, make for a great flick in my eyes. I can most certainly recommend this to anyone into these types of movies, and if anything I've just mentioned above falls into your realm of action flick appreciation, you most certainly should check out the Losers
